The Founder

Guido Corbetta was born in Milan on 4 May 1959. His professional career is intrinsically linked to studies on family businesses, becoming one of the most internationally recognised experts on the subject.

Since 2002 full professor of Corporate Strategy at Bocconi University, in 2004 he launched the first chair in collaboration with AIDAF, which then became permanent in 2014 and is known today as ‘ADAIF-EY Cattedra di strategia delle aziende familiari in memoria di Alberto Falck’. In 2009 he set up and became scientific director of the AUB Observatory (AIDAF, UniCredit, Bocconi), committed to the dissemination of detailed and up-to-date information on the ownership, governance, management and economic/financial performance of all Italian family-owned companies with a turnover of 20 million Euro or more. In 2007 he founded the Graduate School of Bocconi University, of which he was Dean from 2007 to 2010. At the same university over the years he has held various positions, including Pro-rector (2006-2010), Member of the Recruitment and Promotion Committee at the Department of Management and Technology (2013-2016), fellow of the Invernizzi Centre for Research on Innovation, Organisation and Strategy (2013-2024), member of the Executive Committee of Speed Mi Up, startup incubator (2013-2018), member of the Faculty Committee (2014-2024), member of the Strategic Committee of SDA Bocconi School of Management (2014-2016).

Author of numerous scientific publications on family business, his articles have been disseminated in some of the most important international journals such as Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management Studies or Family Business Review, granting him numerous awards, among which the Research Award from European Foundation for Entrepreneurship Research (1989), Case of the Year from EFMD (1998), Research Award from Università Bocconi (2009, 2012, 2013), Best Article from FBR (2013). Among his editorial activities, since 2007 reviewer of the Journal of Management Studies and of the International Small Business Journal, since 2011 member of the Advisory Board of the Entrepreneurship Research Journal, since 2014 reviewer of the Strategic Management Journal, since 2015 member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Amity Journal of Family Business Management and since 2016 member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Management Studies and of the Research Applied Board of Family Business Review. 

Parallel to his university activities, he has served as a board member of major family-controlled groups, as well as successfully overseeing and supporting the generational handovers of many family businesses. He was then a member of the Technical Scientific Committee of the Lombardy Region (2010-2012) and a member of the Scientific Committee of Confindustria (2018-2020). His professional and academic experience led to his inclusion in 2020 by Family Capital - the most popular global family business platform - among the 100 most influential people in the world in family businesses, the only Italian academic to receive this recognition.
