Profiles of new generations, growth and capital opening: key steps for the future and competitiveness of family businesses

The AUB Observatory (AIDAF, UniCredit, Bocconi), also supported by the Angelini Foundation - with the support of Borsa Italiana and ELITE - has the primary objective of presenting an in-depth analysis of the characteristics and economic-financial performance of the renewed population of Italian family businesses. After the pandemic, the panorama is enriched by over 4,200 new family-controlled companies, marking a significant increase of 36%.
This edition devotes special attention to the generational transitions that have occurred in the last decade, exploring the profiles of the NextGen and their central role for the future of family businesses. In addition, a focus on companies that have chosen to open capital is presented. The 16th edition also offers findings on:

- the (new) population of family businesses, which has grown to more than 4,200 new family-controlled companies;

- the evolution of the economic and financial performance of family businesses until 2023, continuing the monitoring compared to pre-Covid (2019);

- governance structures, with the aim of continuing to investigate the evolution of leadership models and the degree of diversity present in the governing bodies of family businesses;

- the degree of internationalisation of family firms, based on foreign direct investment (FDI) made;

- family firms that have opened capital, investigating the drivers but especially the impact on key performance indicators in the years following the capital opening.
