Family Business Competition (fourth edition)

The Family Business Competition is a business game held annually by the AIDAF-EY Chair of Strategy for Family Businesses in memory of Alberto Falck, in collaboration with EY and the FBA (Family Business Association) at Bocconi University — the first Bocconi student association entirely dedicated to family business. The competition involves participants working on a case study focused on the dynamics and complexities typical of family-controlled firms. The case addresses a pivotal turning point for the future of a family business, and participants — acting as external consultants to the family — are tasked with analyzing the situation and proposing innovative solutions that enable the company to overcome one of the challenges that family businesses face in ensuring long-term business continuity.
The initiative is aimed at students who are part of one of the family business student associations affiliated with Bocconi’s, such as the Family Business Club of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the Family Business association of the University of St. Gallen.
The business game aims to simulate the real challenges that entrepreneurial families face daily, offering participants a concrete opportunity to deepen and apply their knowledge of the subject. The experience is enriched by numerous training sessions and learning opportunities with professors from Bocconi University and professionals from EY, which provide valuable theoretical insights, feedback, and contributions drawn from well-established managerial practices. Through the analysis of a complex business case, participants can apply and develop their problem-solving and teamwork skills, as well as present their conclusions and recommendations before an audience of experts in the field.
In 2025, the Family Business Competition reached its fourth edition, taking place between March 21 and April 12. The case study allowed participants to reflect on the importance of governance structures, the complexities of leadership succession, and the influence of family dynamics on strategic business decisions. The winners of the fourth edition were Felix Speicher and Lara Fix, from the Technical University of Munich (TUM).
